ST. LOUIS -- The Cardinals teed off on Mets starter Gary Gentry (4-3) like they were Jack Nicklaus at Augusta. SS Ted Martinez placed the ball on the tee when he booted Brock's grounder in the B1. Ted Sizemore walked, and Matty Alou (2) hit a 3-run bomb to RF to make it 3-0. Torre (5) went back-to-back with Alou; Ted Simmons tripled; you get the picture. When the dust cleared 11 batters came to the plate and St. Louis jumped to a 7-0 lead. Reggie Cleveland (4-5) and company took it the rest of the way for a 7-3 win. The Amazins' got their runs with a Rusty Staub (3) solo shot in the 6th and a Duffy Dyer (2) 2-run blast in the 7th.

ST. LOUIS -- Matty Alou delivered a 2-out B9 single scoring Marty Martinez with the winning run as St. Louis captured this Memorial Day matinee 3-2 and swept the series. The unlikely matchup of Buzz Capra and Scipio Spinks treated the fans to a fine pitcher's duel through 7 innings. In the end it was relievers Moe Drabowsky (2-0) and Bob Rauch (1-1) that took the decisions. Torre came up a HR short of a cycle with 3 safeties.
