Atlanta Dismantles Big Red Machine

Cincinnati,

Game 1,

Gary Matthews broke a 1-1 tie in the 9th inning with a solo homerun. Atlanta added another run in the final frame when Bob Horner doubled off the wall to score Gary Nolan. Craig Skok gets the victory in relief to improve his record at 1-2. Gene Garber pitched the ninth for his 7th save.  Tough luck pitcher, Tom Seaver got tagged with the loss to move to 10-7. Pete Rose collected three hits in the loss. Braves 3...Reds 1.


Game 2,

Sarge crushes two bombs.
Atlanta scored four runs in the third inning. three of the runs came courtesy of a 3-run homerun by Gary Matthews, his second of the series and 12th of the year. The "Sarge" gathered three hits for the game to up his average to .274. Phil Niekro's knuckler kept the Reds' bats off balance all game. Niekro went the distance on only 3 hits and 3 runs to get his 19th win of the year. The loss went to Tom Hume (7-8). Braves 5....Reds 3.




                                                       Game 3,

Foster connects for # 29 and #30
Paul Moskau is becoming the Reds' stopper as he prevented a Braves sweep. Moskau pitched seven solid innings for his 11th triumph of the campaign.  The Reds starter was supported by homeruns from Pete Rose and two off the bat of George Foster.  Reds 7....Braves 1.
