June 16, 1972
ST. LOUIS -- Garry Maddox (5) and Dave Kingman (9) hit timely 2-run homer runs to power the Giants to a 9-7 sea-saw win. Kingman's blast tied the game at 7-7 in the 8th. Pinch hitter Gary Matthews tripled in Maddox in the 9th for the GWRBI. Chris Speier singled in Matthews for the insurance. Jerry Johnson (2-2) earned the win in relief. Jim Barr (3) picked up the save. The loss spoiled fine games at the plate for Lou Brock (4 hits, 3 R,  2 SB) and Ted Sizemore (3 hits, 3 RBI).

ST. LOUIS -- Dave Rader (3) banged out 5 hits, including a solo shot in the 7th, and San Fran captured the rubber game 5-1. It was all straight numbers on the board for the Jints, but they did it 5 times. It was plenty of cushion for "Sudden" Sam McDowell (4-6) who fired 7 IP with just 4 hits and 0 earned runs. Scipio Spinks (5-5) took the loss.
