Cardinals come into this quick 2-game set trailing the Metropolitans by 5 1/2 games. They won't catch them, but maybe can draw a pair of games closer.

ST. LOUIS -- New York out-hits St. Louis 10-3, but on the big board, where it counts, it was 2-1 in favor of the Redbirds. The Mets scored in the 4th on a double-play. The Cards tallied their runs in the 5th with RBI hits from the mighty duo of Dal Maxvill and Ted Sizemore. Al Santorini (4-0) and Jon Matlack (0-1) were the pitchers of record. Chuck Taylor (5) got the save.

ST. LOUIS -- This one turned ugly in the 2nd for the Cardinals and continued the trend to the end as the Mets bats were relentless in a 14-2 bashing. Cleon Jones led the way with 4 hits and 2 RBI. Duffy Dyer had 3 hits and 2 RBI. Donn Clendenon (6) had 2 hits and 3 RBI, including a solo HR. All told, every player in the NYM staring lineup had a hit, except Tim Foli and SP Ray Sadecki (4-2). The former Cardinals WS ring-winner in 1964 pitched 8 wonderful innings for the win.
