In a shocking opening series result, the White Sox pitchers
put the Red Sox hitters on ice as they sweep the “laundry” series. The ChiSox
hurlers limited the Carmines to just 7 runs and a .155 batting average. Steve
Stone went 6 1/3 innings for a season opening 6-3 win. Ron Schueler did not
allow a hit in 2 2/3 as he earned the save.
Chet Lemon’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 9th
plated Bobby Bonds as Chicago grabbed game two 3-2. Jim Willoughby took the win
in relief. Bonds would hit .417 for the series.
Butch Hobson’s error in the bottom of the 8th
allowed the lead run to score. Junior Moore followed with a 2-run single as the
White Sox took the finale 5-2. Larrin LaGrow tossed 2 2/3 innings of hitless
relief or veteran Wilbur Wood and earned the win.
